Don’t Follow Your Passion. Find it First.

Few people my age are 100% sure of what they want to do for a living. Millennials have been let down and given unreasonable standards to live by, one of which is finding your passion. Most of our lives has been planned by public schools and leaves little room for personal projects. At the same time, we are told to live by other people's standards by following the passions of others, such as the unaccomplished dreams of our parents. We are made to believe that sitting in a barren classroom will help us realize what we love the most, but your passion can only be found by you alone. You have to be willing to set aside distractions such as class assignments and homework, and prioritize self learning, which means learning for your sake and not for school.

Personally, I don't know yet what I'm passionate about but I'm taking steps to find out what I like. The first step is to make a list of what you like and dislike. Then give reasons about everything on your list. For me, one of my dislikes is writing. I know it's ironic considering I'm running a blog, but my dislike is a basic and necessary job skill. So keep in mind that your dislikes could be turned into something useful for a future job. The next step is to explore a variety of topics to learn about. This could mean learning a new skill like app building, changing jobs, getting a new hobby, or learning Muay Thai. Basically this step is about discovering yourself.

Now I'm aware that this may not be feasible for everyone. If you are dead certain about your future career then I would recommend to stay in college. Other obligations like bills and family might prevent you from doing as much, but if you have time to play video games or binge watch Netflix then you definitely can make time for yourself. It's up to you if you want to improve yourself.
